Dane woke up alone in the morning. It wasn't every night that he took a woman into his bed but it was often enough that this was unusual. A dull ache in his head told him how much he had drank last night, which was quite the amount considering how well he held his drink. He could out drink most of the men he knew.
When the sunlight peeked through the curtain, he rolled over in bed to shield his eyes. A thought was creeping into his mind, but he tossed it aside just as he tossed the covers in search for food. A hot meal would cure this insufferable ache.

Dane had managed to make it until nightfall before he fully recalled the events of the night previous. A scheme to escape this insufferable city and the rot that was consuming it from inside. He sat in the bar again and ordered a drink. There was not much to do here but drink, which he was starting to believe was what kept him healthy. The burn of the liquid obviously kept the rot out, or at least that's what he told himself when he drank.
His situation was becoming perilous now, he mused over the tankard. He had planned to visit the city for no more than a week, before he moved on again. What really kept him was the beautiful women and drink. And now this plan he had invited himself into.

He could not quite replicate his thinking from the night previous. What had pushed him into inviting himself to join this green group of men with big plans and little sense? Perhaps the drink was too good here. It obviously made him lightheaded.
He had two, no three, options from here on. He could walk away, and never see these crazy people again. He could join them, and loot them when they were stranded on a road. That was tempting. Everyone here seemed too poor to steal from right now.
He frowned at the third option. It was tempting to go straight and join these crazy people. There were no real ties he had to them, so he could leave when the going got rough. Yet, Dane thought quietly, as if he did not want to realize this, he could join them. They seemed like decent men, even if one couldn't hold his drink. It would be quite the adventure to join.
An adventure that differed from his previous ones, which often featured him running off with a merchant's full purse.
Yes, he was less likely to be hunted with this lot. Maybe his old friends wouldn't find him either. He did not miss that lot in the slightest. This folly might be the perfect way to start over. If it went bust, he could just leave, simple as that. He smiled to himself at his own cleverness as he raised his glass to his lips. He would have to find that leader they had now.
