Brushing off Tamora and Anne's kind words, Medea stormed into the home she shared with the Bookers and Dane and threw her basket down. Maud came out of the master bedroom, likely from changing the sheets and making the bed only to see Medea sobbing.
Anne and Tamora tried to explain, without blowing their secret hideout, but Medea silenced them with a hand. "Mama, I'm not dirty! I'm a clean girl. I bathe every day. Every day!" she cried.
Maud took her into a hug, and patted her softly on the back. "What happened, honey?"

"It was Jeph!" blurted Tamora. Maud's face fell into a frown. She had just spoken with Jeph last night about her eldest daughter. She had told him to be kinder to her.
"He said that to you?" Maud looked into Medea's face. "Oh, I'm so sorry-"
"Well, we sort of overheard it," admitted Anne. "Jeph and Dane were talking, and Jeph was so terrible about Medea!"
Maud turned Medea's face up, "Let me talk to Jeph. I will let him know that my daughter won't be spoken of this way."

"Ma," Medea stomped her foot, unhappy with all this talking and these stupid promises. "Jeph is a stupid man. He says I'm filthy while his own daughter rolls around with men. Beatrix is pregnant, Ma, and I'm not! Who's better then?" she shouted angrily.
