It was still dark when Joseph woke. He laid in his bedroll for the time, not wanting to move. His muscles were still protesting the previous day's labours. It was not only his muscles that kept him abed. There was the distinct sound of rain pattering all around him. He pulled his blanket further over his head.
Only when he could hear the sound of someone else shifting around did he move from his warm bedroll. Slipping out from the nest of blankets, he sighed. There would come a day when he did not have to sleep on a pad on the ground. He tended to toss and turn at night, and his blankets would eventually end up on the ground. They were often filthy, and his mother forced him to do his own washing now.

"I guess our luck could only hold for so long." Alistair had crept up beside Joseph while the man was thinking. Joseph nodded grimly. They had traveled here during spring, but the rains had held off for some time, or it only poured at night. Now though it seemed as if they would have to work during the wet.
Dane nodded to the men as he past. He had his cloak on, with the hood pulled far over his forehead. As Joseph watched the man pass, he got a sense of unease from the way the hood was pulled far down. Almost menacing, like an evil you found in the alleyway at night ...
Alistair bumped his friend out of his thoughts, a task he did near daily. "Let us see what we can find to eat." Joseph nodded.

Dane pushed his hair out of his eyes when he swung the axe. It was always a misery when he had to work in the rain. The wet into everything, including his undergarments. It made the axe a slippery beast and all the more dangerous. He was glad that Tobias had been placed in the safety of carving, away from having to fling a fine edged weapon through the air. Nowadays though, Dane kept a comfortable distance from the man. He had acted oddly since he had to switch tasks two weeks ago. He carved near constantly now, even through his meals. His wife was brave to put up with the man.
Dane slammed the axe into the tree, and kept it lodged there. He straightened, stretching his aching back. Taking a quick rest under the shade of the tree allowed him to examine the group working around him.
The women weren't planting today or preparing the soil today, though one was weeding in the rain. The blonde, married one. The rest were under one of the makeshift shelters. Beatrix guarded her pot, and was dropping foodstuffs into it. Dane was relieved to see Lilliane watching over.

Frederick pushed his hair off his forehead. He and his father had been digging for a well the past few days, and they would not let the rain ruin their hard work. They had to shore up the edges so water would not seep into the hole and they erected a makeshift roof overtop. Jeremiah Wille looked over at his wife underneath the rough tents and waved, smiling. His wife say him and grinned, giving him a grin in return. She giggled at the sight her her men. Both were determined, but filthy despite the rain.
Jeremiah smiled once more at his wife, curious at her laughter before turning back to the work at hand. Then he saw his son and knew the source of laughter.
Frederick looked up at his father's laughter, curious. He wiped at his wet face with a hand, causing more laughter from Jeremiah. One wipe had left streaks of mud across his son's face. Frederick shook his head at his father's laughter and bent back to work. At least people enjoyed working in the rain.
